Burdekin Stack(Flex), "Por 241, Clare"
Site Summary
Trial was planted on rain moisture on 3rd January. The field had come out of cane, harvested in September. Fertilizer was applied on the flat through outlets 700mm apart and beds 1100mm wide were pulled up over the top, at 2m centres. A total of 800 kg/ha of fertilizer product was applied, which contributed 200 units N, 40 units P, 87 units K, 32 units S and 5 units/ha Zn. 12 seeds/m were dropped, with a uniform establishment of 10 plants/m achieved across all varieties.
Update for Thursday 1st May, 2008
Crop has continued to mature under excellent weather conditions during April with max day temps averaging 30 deg, nights a couple of degrees cooler than average at about 18 deg. Crop has been receiving an irrigation at about 7 day intervals, and is now up to about 6 incrop. It has been sprayed twice for GVB and Stainers during April, once with Regent+ Salt, once with Talstar. There is no sign of SLW. First defoliation is about 3-4 weeks away. Crop is likely to open quickly as boll maturity appears very concentrated in time.
Update for Friday 4th April, 2008
After rain stopped at the start of March, crop's external water demands have escalated, partly because of the poorly developed root system. First incrop irrigation was in Mid march, with the fourth about to go on. Crop has only started to draw water from below 30 cm in the last week or so, despite it being 1.0m high and averaging 20 nodes. 100 units N was water run with the first irrigation, to compensate for losses through denitrification and accessibility difficulties. Insecticide applied for mirids on 21st March, Spodoptera last week, but few other insect concerns at this stage.
Update for Wednesday 27th February, 2008
Record rainfall has continued through February, making management of the cotton difficult. Some shedding and death of young squares is evident. Root system has not had a chance to get established, as crop was planted on rain, and rain has not stopped. Second Roundup OTT went on by air on 18th Feb, and 500 ml/ha Pix on 25th Feb.
Update for Thursday 31st January, 2008
Field has received almost continual rain since planting. A combined application of 1.6 kg/ha Roundup Ready Plant Shield and 200 ml/ha PIx occurred by ground rig on 29th January.A stripe pattern was evident in the crop in early stages , indicating some variability in N uptake, possibly due to a GPS problem when pulling up the beds over the pre-plant applied fertilizer.Crop is growing out of this, and seems to be going ahead in leaps and bounds, reaching 8.0 nodes at 28 DAP.
