Update for Thursday 26th March, 2009
Good growing conditions during the last fortnight have enabled the crop to push on, despite the low NAWF. First irrigation about 20th March, and the second is soon to go on. Crop has received about 270 units of N in total. Crop has received three OTT Roundup Ready applications, and two cultivations. Very heavy egg pressure has resulted in the need for a Heliothis spray to pick up survivors. A new pest, Mealy Bug has established in a number of the Burdekin cotton crops. They are causing small bolls to shed from sucking damage, and honeydew is bad in places. Control is difficult, with extremely good coverage being required. Their presence is worst in fields where there were numbers of stub cotton volunteers from last year's crop. Ladybirds are an active predator. Sicot 71BRF has put on 3 nodes and grown an average 12 cm in two weeks. NAWF remains at 3.5. Retention has improved dramatically.
Update for Wednesday 11th March, 2009
Trial field is at a critical stage. It has received close to 1000 mm of rain since planting, and the crop is suffering from the combined effects of waterlogging, low radiation and available nitrogen shortage. Almost continuous overcast weather in February has resulted in massive fruit shedding, with combined first & second position retention on fruiting branches 1-6 < 15%. As well, many small bolls have not shed their dried floral remnants due to the wet conditions, and are aborting. Big quantities of N as sulfate of ammonia has been worked in since the rain took up, but whether the plants, with their relatively small root systems can pick up enough in time is the big question. Sicot 71BRF is on average 68 cm tall, has 11 FB and 3.5 NAWF
