An excellent result, considering how slow growth was early season with seedling disease. The plant stand was affected but due to perfect growing conditions from December onwards, the plant compensated for the poor plant stand and placed much fruit on outer positions. High boll numbers in excess of 170 bolls/m plus above average boll weights contributed to the results in this trial. A good start for the new Bollgard 3 varieties.

The crop was planted on the 3rd October and water up on the 7th of October with the previous crop being faba beans. Crop emerged well but was hit with severe cold spell which allowed rhizoctonia to take hold. From that period we gradually lost stand to finish with 8 plants per meter. The crop was very steady until mid December when it started to put on nodes quite quickly. On the 13th of January we applied 750mls of pix to slow vigorous growth. We followed up with another 1.3 Litres on the 24th January to cut crop out. The crop has finished with approx. 27 nodes and averaging 173 Bolls/M.

Irrigation :
Crop received 8 in crop irrigation and 1 water up, water use was approx. 7.8 ML/Ha

Nutrition : The soils tested very high in N levels prior to fertilizing due to past Faba Bean crop. We applied 150 Kg/N/Ha as anhydrous ammonia pre plant along with 180 Kg/Ha of a MAP + Potassium blend. We also applied 100 Kg/N/Ha as urea as well as two foliar applications of Zinc in crop.
Despite the poor conditions at the start of the season and less than ideal plant stand, the crop has performed beyond expectations.
